What is the Skeletal System?
The skeletal system is the system that supports the body and gives it shape. The most important duty of the skeleton is to provide support and protection for our body. The skeletal system also allows the body to move with assistance of muscles and also protects the internal organs. The skeletal system is made up of bones, which are comprised of 206 bones in an adult human body. Bones provide structure for muscles to attach so that our bodies are able to move. The skeleton protects the brain, eyes, heart, lungs, and spinal cord. The cranium protects the brain and eyes, while the ribs protect the heart, stomach and lungs; the vertebrae protect the spinal cord. Bones are living parts of the body and are made of cells. As the body grows and goes through changes the bones do as well. “On average, human tissues are made up of 62 percent water, while bones contain only 20 percent” (Price, 2010, p. 2).
